The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
2013, Adventure/Comedy/Drama, Rated PG, 114 Minutes.
Starring: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn
The day-dreaming Walter Mitty escapes his dull, anonymous life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job is at risk, he takes action in the real world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have imagined. Available 7 May – Outdoor from 7 July 2014.

Ben Stiller’s passion project is possibly not quite what you would expect. Comedian Stiller takes a more serious tone on The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty that he not only stars in but directs as well. The film follows the title character a lonely office worker who hasn’t ever done anything ‘Noteworthy or Mentionable’ he daydreams about a more adventurous life that Centre’s around his infatuation with co-worker Cheryl (Kristen Wiig) and standing up to his new boss who’s firing almost everyone as their magazine transitions to being online. It’s the classic tale of can the geek stand up to the bully and win the girl. Given the broad appeal of the film it can only end one way and you are never really left guessing what will happen next. It feels a lot like a classic midday movie in the disguise of a blockbuster and this might be due to the fact that it’s a remake of a 1947 film of the same name. Bigger on sentimentality than laughs it’s a beautifully shot crowd pleaser that isn’t really that ‘Noteworthy or mentionable’.

Review out of five stars: ★★★ Stars.
