A 12-year-old boy searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world.

Dr Suess is back for another dose of 3D animation, thanks to the creators behind Despicable Me and that other Suess classic Horton Hears a Who. The Lorax is a cautionary tale of the impact our greed can have on the world we live in and in this case resulting in a world with no trees. In this familiar but surreal world made of plastic and concrete a young girl longs to see a real life tree – for real. Fortunately she has a secret admirer, who sets about finding her one to win her love.

The animation is bright and bold and literally jumps off the screen, with the POV chase scenes and rapids ride being nauseatingly good fun and obviously designed for its 3D release. I never read this story so I’m not sure if the songs are a new addition, but this is one of the major issues with the film as Musical’s make my skin crawl – does that make me a Grinch? I have been swayed by some musicals in the past but this isn’t one of them. The lyrics are so banal they almost feel like mini intermissions to the story at hand. However the audience of children I was with in the cinema were singing along at the top of their lungs, which I think confirms my Grinch status.

It’s a great message and hopefully we’ve left some tree’s around by the time these kids grow up – Get me some bottled air!

Rating out of five stars: ★★★
